History of Sorrento

The area that is known as Sorrento today was first settled in the late 1800s. At this time, the tiny community was named Conway and consisted of nothing more than a handful of homesteads, a grocer and a post office. However, when the railroad ran through Conway in 1902, the town began to blossom.

A sawmill was built in 1909 at about the same time that the town was renamed Sorrento after Sorrento, Italy. In 1928, oil was discovered in the town, and the area exploded with growth. Soon after this, a neighborhood was laid out and roads were constructed. Sorrento was incorporated in 1956.
